Recent research has revealed that smaller lenders may offer the best mortgage deals.

Building societies are currently offering a wide choice of mortgage products priced at highly competitive levels. The smaller lenders it would seems are proving a much more popular choice than the high street lenders.

Recent figures show around two thirds of best buy mortgages are offered by mutuals. Mutual organisations are owned by members and customers and not shareholders, and they tend to offer more affordable mortgage products for those with a smaller deposit.

Because building societies are owned by members rather than shareholders they can often deliver better long term value on mortgage deals and savings rates.

A spokesperson for the Association of Financial Mutuals commented on the research saying that the reason mutuals are so competitive is because they do not need to pay dividends to shareholders profits. Profits can therefore can be used to provide cheaper rates, better customer service and higher investment return.

Smaller sized building societies such as Hinckley & Rugby, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Leek United, Cheshire and Nottingham have all offered best buy mortgages this year.

In addition smaller lenders often review mortgage applications on an individual basis and less on automated credit scores. Applicants who might otherwise be rejected by larger banks are being accepted for a deal.
