It has been reported that the high street retailer Marks and Spencer, is planning to launch a chain of branches offering banking services including mortgages.
Retail Week has reported that the first Marks and Spencer banking branch is to open in July within the retailer's flagship store at Marble Arch in London.
It was also reported that there are plans to open further branches within existing Marks and Spencer stores, which will remain open longer than traditional high street banks. Opening hours will match store opening times which should enable customers to bank seven days a week. Customers are also to benefit from online banking and UK based call centres.
Marks and Spencer currently offers financial services trading under the name of M&S Money, which is actually owned by HSBC. M&S Money offers savings accounts, insurance, credit cards, loans and exchanges money for travel, competitive mortgage rates are to be added to the range of products offered.
The Chief Executive of the newly set up M&S Bank commented saying that loyal store customers will be excited to bank with their favourite high street retailer. We will offer customers a credible and alternative choice to the current banking sector.
